Metro joins in celebrating Juneteenth, which became recognized as a federal holiday yesterday when President Joe Biden signed it into law.
In 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger announced the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas. The announcement came two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Slavery did not end in all border and Union states until the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified in December 1865. This late announcement by Granger led to many celebrations by former enslaved Americans and is what has become known as Juneteeth today.
In his speech yesterday, President Biden stated, “Emancipation of enslaved Black Americans didn’t mark the end of America’s work to deliver on the promise of equality. It only marked the beginning. To honor the true meaning of Juneteenth we have to continue toward that promise because we have not gotten there yet.”
The Metro team is committed to doing the work of ensuring that all students, families, and staff are welcomed and feel a sense of belonging. We believe that the Metro habit of being an active and responsible decision maker means being willing to stand up for equity and inclusion for all. While Metro was unable to modify its summer calendar in observance of this important day, Juneteenth will be a district-wide holiday in future years.
