Metro Update: April 7th, 2014
Festival of Friends Gala April 12
We hope you will join us this Saturday, April 12 at 6pm for the Festival of Friends fundraising gala at Metro. Tickets are still available for $15/person or $50/family, which includes access to a fun filled evening geared toward raising funds for student activities.
To secure your spot or learn more, visit www.themetroschool.org and click on the Festival of Friends link at the top of the left side menu. Advance registration and payment will greatly assist the committee in preparing for the event, so please register to attend as soon as possible.
ROX Group Service Project
The ROX girls club is preparing care packages for Faith Mission’s Women’s Shelter. Your donations of new personal care products would be greatly appreciated; they can be dropped off in Ms. Mechling’s office (school counselor) by April 16. Suggested items:

High school students will participate in a spring design challenge centered on water. Students have selected work groups which will meet during school time to develop their project and final presentation. Work times will be at the beginning of the day on the following dates (days will follow an advisory schedule):

Thursday, April 24
Preliminary presentations will be April 23 and final presentations May 2. Please help ensure your student is in attendance for work days and presentations to contribute to their group project. Geometry Field Trip Wednesday
This Wednesday, Mr. Matthews’ Geometry classes will travel to the OSU campus to collect data for a unit project. Students will spend either the first or second half of the day on campus (depending on their class schedule) and may bring along a packed lunch or money to purchase food on campus. Virgin Islands Trip
Spots are still available for this summer’s Global Health trip to the Virgin Islands. The trip engages students in the study of the healthcare infrastructure and diseases common to the island and marine environment. Participation requires enrollment in a course currently underway and a downpayment of $600. See the link below for more details or Mrs. Hayes (email@example.com) with any questions.
COTA Access During CCS Spring Break
Columbus City Schools typically restricts use of COTA passes on days the district is not in session, but have arranged for Metro students to use their COTA IDs for transportation to/from school during their upcoming spring break (April 14-21). There is a possibility that some drivers/routes may not be aware of the exception, so please prepare by providing your student with bus fare if needed. Days affected will be April 14-16.
5K Race to Benefit Metro STEM
The Society of Women Engineers is sponsoring Ready, Set, Glow for STEM – an evening 5K race and volleyball tournament April 13th from 7pm-11pm at Fred Beekman Park (corner of Kenny and Lane). Registration is $10 for volleyball and $20 for the race or $25 for both. Proceeds benefit Metro! See the attached flyer for details and a registration link:
Summer Camp Opportunities
The University of Illinois offers a two-week residential camp for students interested in journalism. Application deadline is May 1. Visit their website for details.
Women in the Sciences Camp for Middle School Girls
Marietta College is hosting WITS: “Women in the Sciences” June 22-28. The program focuses on hands on science, math and computer exploration activities. Current 6th-8th graders may apply; deadline is April 15. Visit their website for more details.
