Metro Seniors Seek OSU Professors to Sponsor Student Research Projects
Metro, located at 1929 Kenny Rd on West campus of OSU, is actively recruiting OSU professors and researchers doing STEM or biomedical research who are willing to sponsor a Metro student research project. Metro is a small and intellectually vibrant learning community open to all students in Franklin County, including economically disadvantaged students who might be first generation college goers. Metro is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) based high school founded and supported by OSU and Battelle. It is designed to serve students who want an accelerated, personalized and extraordinary learning experience that prepares them for a connected world where STEM fields are vitally important. Through authentic research outside of our classrooms, we can and do instill a passion for knowledge that will foster future careers in the science driven professions.
Metro’s curriculum is divided into two phases: Phase one: Mastery of core high school prep; and Phase two: College coursework at OSU, internships and Junior research projects. As part of Phase two, qualified seniors must complete an independent, year-long research project in order to graduate.
Qualifications for Senior Research Project:
- Mastery of 18 core high school course credits (of the 22 required for graduation)
- Completion of Junior Research Project
- Successful completion of internship
- Minimum of 20 OSU quarter hours completed with a GPA of at least 3.0.
The Major Tenets of a Senior Research Project Include:
- Development of a hypothesis
- Experimentation
- Data interpretation and analysis (critical thinking skills)
- Communication of research findings and connection to society
- Collaboration
- A multi-faceted STEM connection.
The OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) supports Metro’s Senior Research project and encourages clinical and translational investigators to participate as mentors on student projects. Although we have support from CCTS, we are actively recruiting additional OSU professors and researchers doing STEM or biomedical research who are able to support a Metro student research project. Advisors will be matched to an individual senior student prior to the beginning of Fall quarter based on mutual interests. In collaboration with the Senior Research Coordinator, the participating faculty advisor will help develop relevant research skills, monitor progress, assist in data analysis and interpretation, and participate in student presentation of research findings. The projects will be assigned an OSU 294 course number within the appropriate college. Students are expected to put in at least 3 quarter hours per quarter with a total of 9 hours throughout the duration of the project.
